Agricultural Projects

It was very important that the feeding program was sustainable in the long term - to this end land was donated by the Shongwe family to enable us to plant our own maize field, the product of which would be used to make the porridge. We are very fortunate that the land is very near the river therefore has it's own free water supply and is large enough for our needs. As our projects grow there is also the option to make use of neighbouring fields for an increase in production as and when required. The tractor has proved invaluable once more in the ploughing and harvesting of our field and crops. Our first crop was harvested in March 2009 and replanted the following September. Our second crop was harvested during Lynn's visit in April and we have a bumper crop. The government is now providing all the food required for the school feeding programme which means we can now put all our food resources into the Orphan's project.

During Lynn's visit in April 2010 a second maize field was secured and ploughed ready to plant, along with the original field, later in the year. We have also ploughed and planted a large vegetable field with lettuce, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, leeks, onions, carrots and beetroot.

We have also purchased a sow "Polly" who will be used for breeding, selling and eating so our children will have a sustainable supply of fresh meat.

Lynn's visit in May 2011 has again seen a fantastic harvest - so much so that we have had to build a second maize crib in which to store it all! This year we have enough maize to supply the feeding programme for the next 12 months with surplus left over to sell. Polly has given birth to her first 6 piglets one of which was slaughtered in May and has provided enough pork to treat our children to a meat meal twice a month for the next 6 months - an amazing achievement. The next phase will see Polly plus a female piglet being bred to build on this foundation.
